Persuasive Texts
During this unit, students will be exploring the purpose and features of persuasive texts. This will involve:
- Interpreting the author’s point of view
- Exploring how evaluative and emotive language is used to influence the reader
- Understanding the author’s use of imagery and language to persuade
- Comparing viewpoints within a text
By the end of this unit, students will respond to a text stating the argument, supporting facts and persuasive techniques used. They will also be evaluating the strength of the persuasive techniques identified.
Writing
Writing to Persuade
During this unit, students will be exploring the purpose of persuasive texts and effectively using techniques commonly found in persuasive writing. This will involve:
- Developing a clear point of view on a topic of interest
- Examining how spoken texts differ from written texts
- Presenting a point of view using persuasive text features
- Supporting an argument with logical reasons and supporting evidence
By the end of the unit, students will write a persuasive piece of writing that will aim to convince the reader of their opinion.
Numeracy
Multiplication and Division
During this unit, students will build on their understanding of multiplication and division. They will use this understanding to solve a variety of real-life problems. This will involve:
- Using a variety of strategies to multiply two-digit by one and two-digit numbers
- Dividing large numbers by a single digit, including those resulting in a remainder
- Identifying both factors and multiples of a number and using this knowledge to solve problems
- Using the connection between multiplication and division to solve equivalent number sentences
- Applying their knowledge to solve worded problems
By the end of the unit, students will solve a variety of worded problems and use efficient methods to calculate both multiplication and division sums.
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
In this unit, students will work on what fractions and decimals are, how they are related and how we can use them in many different situations. The skills that will be focused on are:
- Comparing fractions and exploring the basic relationship between fractions and decimals.
- Representing fractions and decimals through diagrams, words and number format.
- Placing fractions and decimals on a number line between 0 and 1 whole and counting along a number using common unit fractions.
- Finding equivalent values (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4 = 0.5) by using fraction walls and multiplying the numerator and denominator of fractions by a shared number.
- Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa.
- Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators e.g. (2/5 + 1/5)
- Solving fraction and decimal problems in worded and numerical form.
By the end of this unit, students will have demonstrated their understanding through their completed bookwork, engaging in class discussions and completing assessments.
Inquiry
Gold
In this unit, students will learn about the gold rush. They will commence this unit with their camp to Sovereign Hill. Throughout this experience they will explore aspects of what it would have been like for different cultural groups and minorities on the goldfields in Australia. Through their investigation, students will learn how certain events not only affected the gold rush but contributed towards turning Australia into the country we know today.
By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding through various avenues including an assessment via Google Forms.
